How a Vegan Lifestyle Changed My Health
Share
I never thought I'd be the guy writing a blog post about veganism. For most of my life, I ate like most Americans — meat at every meal, dairy without a second thought, and very little consideration for where my food came from or what it was doing to my body.
Then kidney stones entered my life, and everything changed.
The Pain That Started It All
If you've never had a kidney stone, consider yourself lucky. The pain is often described as worse than childbirth — a sharp, relentless agony that radiates from your back through your abdomen. I experienced this repeatedly over several years. Doctors gave me medications, told me to drink more water, and sent me home. The stones kept coming back.
I started researching on my own. What I discovered surprised me: diet plays a massive role in kidney stone formation. Animal proteins — meat, dairy, eggs — increase the levels of uric acid and calcium oxalate in the urine, which are the primary building blocks of the most common types of kidney stones. A plant-based diet, on the other hand, creates a more alkaline urinary environment that actively discourages stone formation.
Going Vegan: The First 90 Days
I won't sugarcoat it — the first few weeks were an adjustment. I had to learn new recipes, rethink my grocery shopping, and navigate social situations where plant-based options were limited. But I committed fully, and the results came faster than I expected.
By the end of the first month, I noticed I had more energy in the mornings. By month two, the chronic inflammation I'd been living with — stiff joints, general fatigue — had noticeably decreased. By month three, my doctor confirmed what I was already feeling: my kidney health markers had improved significantly.
The kidney stones stopped. Completely.
The Benefits I Didn't Expect
Beyond the kidney stones, going vegan delivered a cascade of benefits I hadn't anticipated:
- Better sleep — Plant-based foods are easier to digest, and I stopped waking up feeling heavy and sluggish.
- Clearer skin — Dairy is a known trigger for inflammation and acne. Cutting it out made a visible difference.
- Improved mental clarity — I felt sharper, more focused, and more emotionally balanced.
- Weight stabilization — Without trying to diet, my weight settled into a healthy range naturally.
It's About More Than Health
What started as a health decision became something much deeper. As I learned more about veganism, I couldn't ignore the ethical and environmental dimensions. The factory farming industry causes immense suffering to animals and is one of the leading contributors to climate change. Choosing plants over animal products is one of the most impactful individual choices a person can make for the planet.
That realization is what led me to create ConsciousValues — a brand built on the belief that our everyday choices matter. From the food we eat to the clothes we wear, every decision is an opportunity to live in alignment with our values.
Our Vegan AF Garden Floral T-Shirt and Vegan AF Plush Blanket are more than just products — they're conversation starters, declarations of values, and reminders of why this lifestyle matters.
